Map of Manna drone deliveries in Balbriggan, Ireland

It’s easy to cheer on sidewalk robot and drone delivery right now in part because many of these services are just in pilot programs. It’s okay where there are a few dozen robots on city sidewalks, or very limited drone delivery flights — but what happens if/when there are hundreds of delivery robots scurrying about and just as many drones in the sky?

Bloomberg has a story up today about a tool that might actually help cities get an answer to that question before these robots and drones become commonplace. Yesterday, Bloomberg published “How Cities Are Using Digital Twins Like a SimCity for Policymakers.” In a nutshell, gaming software company Unity is creating accurate, detailed digital digital versions of real cities in which simulations of new infrastructure projects could be run.

Bloomberg doesn’t mention sidewalk robots or drones in particular, but it seems like this tool could be used for just such a thing.
