Robots Break Ground on Autonomous Construction Tech
Monumental and TerraFirma raise tens of millions as Xpanner rolls out an automated solar-installation system
Construction has long looked like an obvious target for automation: The work is repetitive, physically demanding and constrained by chronic labor shortages. The harder problem has been making robots dependable on messy, constantly changing job sites. Three announcements in the past few days suggest the industry is making headway, with new capital and commercial systems spanning bricklaying, earthmoving and utility-scale solar construction.

Amsterdam-based Monumental raised a $32 million Series B led by Khosla Ventures to expand its fleet of electric bricklaying robots and enter the U.S. market this year. The company operates as an autonomous subcontractor rather than simply selling machines, using more than 100 robots and its Atrium software platform to apply mortar and position bricks with millimeter-level precision. Monumental says its robots have already helped construct the walls of more than 100 homes, as well as a school, hotel, community center and canal infrastructure across Europe.
Austin-based TerraFirma announced approximately $115 million in funding, including a $100 million Series A led by Kleiner Perkins. Founded by former SpaceX engineers Noah Schochet and Noah McGuinness, the vertically integrated construction company combines AI-assisted planning, remote command centers and semi-autonomous heavy equipment. Excavators, dozers and loaders are retrofitted so skilled operators can control and eventually supervise multiple machines from a screen, with the new funding earmarked for expanding TerraFirma’s engineering, manufacturing and construction operations.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe Springs, California-based Xpanner introduced its X1 Panel Lift, an excavator-based system that transports boxes of photovoltaic modules, picks up individual panels and positions them for installation. The human operator remains in control, while automated vacuum handling, sensor-assisted alignment and a one-button workflow take over the most repetitive lifting and placement tasks. Powered by Xpanner’s Mango controller and a mix of LiDAR, vision and GNSS sensing, X1 is offered through a subscription that includes the equipment, software and on-site support.
Taken together, these announcements show that autonomous construction is developing less as a single breakthrough robot than as a collection of tightly defined, commercially useful workflows. These companies are also wrapping their machines in services, software and human supervision—an acknowledgment that contractors buy completed work and dependable productivity, not autonomy for its own sake. The construction robot revolution may arrive one task at a time, but it is increasingly arriving on real job sites.
