One of the earliest progenitors of retail and restaurant automation were the famed “Automats” - fast food restaurants powered by simple vending machines. First invented in Berlin in 1895, by the early 20th century they had grown so ubiquitous that they gave title to one of Edward Hopper’s most famous paintings.
